Status Of Women

Women have always been an integral part of human civilization. The position of women in Indian villages has seen many significant changes from the ancient period to the contemporary period. Historical incidents of sati are also celebrated in folklore. in which The women were forcefully burnt with their dead husbands and made Sati. they were given in marriage at an early age of only 4-5 years and the young widows were also not allowed to remarry.

However such examples don’t have any relation to the actual status of women. Hamirpur is not a developed city. So like other rural parts of the country, one may found women cooking, working in fields, grazing cattle, collecting dung, bringing water, collecting firewood and doing manual labor at construction sites yet their contribution is unrealized.

Currently, Womens are doing heavy manual labor in compression to the man yet they receive lower daily wages. This phenomenon is happening in the entire Hamirpur region.

Domestic violence is common in Hamirpur. Female partner is more commonly the victim of domestic violence. They have to face abusive or violent behavior of other family members. Due to the poor education they are unable to report it to the authorities. Women from SC groups are also vulnerable to sexual harassment exercised by upper caste men. There is no strong women’s rights movement, although many small, localized efforts exist

There is no data on how many such cases take place in Hamirpur - and we have no way of knowing how many such cases go unreported - but some indication can be got from state-wise figures.

Also, widows and women rejected by husbands are ill-treated by the society. It was noted in female group discussions that except for a few very old widows, many of the women chose to live with another male, often their brother-in-law ('jeth').

There were also instances of women moving away with the new men in their lives, leaving their children to be looked after by aged parents.

Religious Groups

The population is overwhelmingly Hindu. The percentage of Hindu population in  Hamirpur is much higher than the percentage of its surroundings. The Muslim population of Hamirpur District lies mostly in Kurara, Rath, Maudaha and Muskara.

Coexisting with mainstream Hinduism have diversity of religious beliefs and practices  so they impart a powerful influence of Folk culture.which makes this region unique among numerous other traditions .

A sizable Muslim population is found in Hamirpur only in a few villages of  Hamirpur.see table in Religious Groups in Hamirpur).According to Census 2001 figures, the maximum Muslim population in Hamirpur districtswas 83000.The muslim population shows the glory of  Muslim rulers in pre-British-rule times, and Urdu continues to be used and taught there.

Pathans, Qureshis, Siddiquis, Sayids, Ghoris and Muslim Rajputs are the categories of Sunni Muslim. There are also several Muslim occupational groups like Behnas, Julahas, Kunjras and Qassabs.
Hamirpur has several important places of Hindu pilgrimage that attract people of the religion from all over the country. The majority of the Jains belong to the Digambar sect and are traders or moneylenders.

In the some Rath region of District, there is a church establishment dating from the 1930s, and there are a few Christian families., who live separately and have a distinctive lifestyle.

Hamirpur District

Hamirpur, with an area of around 4,000 sq km and population of 10.5 lakhs (Census 2001), is among India's least urbanised and industrialised districts.
Till recently the district included a southern hilly and forested portion that has been made into a separate district called Mahoba.

Hamirpur town, which  has a population of less than 35,000, stands on a tongue of land near the confluence of the Betwa and Yamuna rivers.  It is well connected by road to Kanpur, 60 km away, and by rail to Kanpur and Banda.

According to tradition, the town was founded in the 11th century by one Hamir Deo, a Rajput from Alwar.

Most of Hamirpur district is a treeless alluvial plain through which the Yamuna, Betwa, Dhasan, Ken rivers and numerous tributaries flow in tortuous routes. The rivers cause extensive soil erosion and formation of ravines.

Among the few non-agricultural products of note from the district is soapstone, used to make vessels, dishes and object d art, mined at a village called Gorahri.

Hamirpur is one of the districts of UP where Krishi Gyan Kendras to train farmers in different aspects of crop production and livestock management have been set up by the Kanpur-based Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture (founded 1893), a premier institution of agricultural research and education.

Rath (pop. around 56,000) is the largest town in the district.

Ancient History: Hamirpur

The early history of hamirpur region covered by the present district of Hamirpur may be traced back to the Palaeolithic age as evidenced by the discovery of choppers, hand axes and pebble cores.

According to the Pauranic tradition the earliest known Aryan people who settled in this region, lying between the Yamuna and the Vindhyas, were known as Chedis. The Chedi kingdom was known as one of the 16 most important kingdom of that period in Mahabharat. The Mahabharata describes the Chedis as being blessed with knowledge of the eternal law of righteousness. King Shishupal, ruled this kingdom and killed by Krishna. It is said that its chivalrous Kshatriya, acting on the advice of Krishna, humiliated their enemies by making them prisoners and gave joy to their friends.

After some period this region was ruled by Mauray’s and Shungas. The district came under the domination of Kanishka (78-120).

After him the history of the district is shrouded in obscurity till about the middle of the third century. when Vindhyasakti (255-275) rose to power who was founder of the Vakataka dynasty. It seems that the district partly came under the Vakataka sway and partly under the Bhaarshivas , a branch of ancient Nagawanshi kshatriyas, whose sphere of influence extended at that time from Gwalior and Mathura in the West to probably Varanasi and Mirzapur in the east Gupta dynasty also ruled this region from the mid of 4th century and continued till the beginning of the 6th century.

The country ruled by the Chandels from the beginning of 9th century, was organised into a bhukti (province), called Jejakbhukti. Jejakbhukti coincides with modern Bundelkhand comprising this district. During the rule of Khangars Rajput (between 12th century and 14th century), the area including other parts of Bundelkhand came to be known as Jujhauti (or the land of warriors).

In the eleventh century the town of Hamirpur, which gave its name of the district, was founded by one Hamira Deva, a Kalachuri Rajput, who came there from Alwar and took shelter with one Bunda, an Ahir.
Bunda's name still survives in the neighbouring village of Budanpur, where remains of an ancient Khera are found. Having no male issue, Hamira Deva adopted his daughter's son Ram Singh, who married with the daughter of a Rajput of Amlar in Banda district. He was offered, in marriage, the eastern portion of pargana Maudaha as dowry. The remains of the fort built by Hamira Deva are still found in Hamirpur.
